MUSCLE LOSS AFTER A LONG BREAK, A REALITY?

1/03/2024
When we go on vacation or when we are unable to train for a few months, we always tell ourselves that we will lose a lot of muscle because we will not be able to train for a long period of time, and sometimes we even have the impression that we are losing muscle at sight when we look in the mirror! But is this really true? Do we really lose muscle by not training for just a few weeks, or even a few months?

WHAT IS IT?

Then it depends! When you have been training for a long time and you go on vacation for 2, 3 or even 4 weeks, there is no real loss of muscle mass... it's all in your head! On the other hand, what is inevitable is that you will feel less energetic than usual, since your muscles will no longer be congested like after your training. There are other factors to take into account such as age, generally people under 30 years old lose muscle mass less quickly if the break is longer!

MUSCLE MEMORY

Some people sometimes reassure themselves by saying: "In any case, with muscle memory, I should be back in top shape fairly quickly..." and they are not wrong! However, to be more precise, the muscles do not really have a memory as such, it is rather the result of the fact that the brain has been used to the movements you make during your sessions, so it is rather a motor memory to be correct!

As a result, the muscles that were trained before this long break will return to their optimal state as soon as you return to training regularly.

tips

  • It can be tricky to do, but make sure you still get enough protein in your diet! For example, bring along some Metapure and small snacks to eat every day.
  • Also consume creatine! 3g at breakfast for example, it will help you keep your muscle mass during this break.
